State of the Game: December 2020

It's December 2020 and I just launched the official page for this game! Thanks for visiting. We're a long way from release, but I'm extremely passionate about this project and working on it as often as possible (which is quite a bit). It's been in on and off development for about six months, and I want to briefly talk about what's done and what isn't.

The hardest and most important part of building a game like this is getting the combat system right--it's the core of the gameplay, and it's also where the most things can go wrong! Fortunately, that's what I've been working on these last six months. At this point I'm almost finished with the basics of combat--abilities, battlers, statuses, and combat handling is all done and working. There are still a few kinks to work through but I have a strong design plan and know how to approach each of them. The important thing is that you can fight and it works! Awesome.

So what's left? A lot. But most of it is pretty easy compared to getting the battles working. Mostly a matter of rigging up the campaigns and getting the early game loop going.

Here's what's done so far:

  • Battlers, statuses, abilities, main combat loop
  • Simple attack and ability animations
  • Simple UI elements

Here's what's left to do before I have something I'd be ready to call an "alpha" and give to testers:

  • Main game home screen / Kingdom menu
  • Roster view and sort
  • Upgrade (xp/gear) system for battlers
  • Passive abilities
  • Simple dialogue system for storytelling
  • Basic Campaign rigging (setting up battles)
  • Basic campaign established
  • Building the first 10-15 battlers with abilities
  • Save/Load
  • Options Menu

That might look like a long list, but I'm closer than it might seem! Most of the items in my "to-do" list have about 1/10th of the complexity of the combat system, so we're well on our way. I can't wait to get the game to the point where I can start sharing it with you all.

Be sure to look for new updates soon and feel free to say hi on Twitter!
